“We need an app” is one of the most common things we hear. Sometimes it’s exactly right. Often a faster, clearer website would bring more customers for a fraction of the cost.
When a website is enough
If people visit you to learn, compare, book or buy once in a while, a well-built website does the job. No download, no app store, and it works on every device.
When an app makes sense
Frequent use, push notifications, offline access, camera or location, or a logged-in community where people return every day. KRUG, a platform for beauty professionals, is a good example: profiles, posts, catalogue and chat in one place people open daily.
The middle ground
A web app can feel like an app, work on phones and be installed to the home screen, without the cost of two native apps. It’s a great way to test demand first.
Start with a first version
Whatever you choose, start with the smallest version that solves the most important job. Real users will tell you what to build next, far better than any planning session.

Ask yourself
How often will people use it? Do they need it offline? Do you need notifications? Who will maintain it in two years? If most answers are “rarely” and “no”, start with the website.
